Limburg, a freelance writer, stumbled on an account of a freighter that exploded in the Indian Ocean in mysterious circumstances. The ship later was located nearly 15,000 feet underwater and identified through modern technology. Limburg was, you might say, hooked and began researching how such complicated undersea investigations are carried out. His account of the advances that have made it possible to bring back information from as deep as 20,000 feet includes plenty of mysteries and all the drama of investigators on the hunt for clues.
